BBC Virtual Newsroom

BBC World Service

The BBC's Virtual Newsroom project addresses the challenge of declining trust in news in India.

The BBC News mission of clarity, courage, fairness, respect, and transparency is central to its commitment to earning audience trust. The Trust is Earned campaign in India highlights BBC News’ rigorous journalistic standards: reporting fearlessly, considering all perspectives, showing the big picture, and meticulously checking facts.

To deepen audience engagement with the campaign we developed the Virtual Newsroom, a gamified experience that simulates a real newsroom. This innovative platform allows users to follow the news production process, check their understanding in quizzes, and create their own news homepage.

Launched in December 2024, the Virtual Newsroom had attracted over 230,000 visitors by January 2025, with users spending more than 10,000 hours on the platform. This initiative enhances audience understanding of BBC News' commitment to the highest journalistic standards, thereby strengthening trust through transparency and interactive engagement.

The BBC's Virtual Newsroom exemplifies how technology can transform audience relationships with news media, reinforcing the BBC's century-long commitment to honest and impartial journalism while pioneering new ways to connect with audiences in the digital age.
